Ortley Beach’s beloved Pop’s Coffee Shop is marking a remarkable milestone this weekend. Since opening in 2020, the local business has donated more than $400,000 to Make-A-Wish New Jersey through its ongoing partnership, turning every cup of coffee into life-changing wishes for children battling critical illnesses.

A teenage boy got to experience what it’s like to be a trauma surgeon for a day thanks to Make-A-Wish New Jersey. Alexander Alvarez, a 13-year-old leukemia survivor from Carteret, was known as “Dr. Alex” for a day as he gained hands-on experience at Hackensack University Medical Center.

A 13-year-old leukemia survivor from Carteret spent the day stepping into the role of a trauma surgeon after his wish was granted through a partnership between Make-A-Wish New Jersey and Hackensack Meridian Health. Alexander Alvarez, known as “Dr. Alex” for the day, was given hands-on experience at Hackensack University Medical Center, where he learned emergency and operating room procedures and took part in a simulated trauma response.

On average each day in the Garden State, two families receive test results that tell them their child has been diagnosed with a life-threatening, critical illness. That adds up to 700 children every year. That news qualifies their child for the Make-A-Wish New Jersey (MAWNJ) mission to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

The New Jersey Devils and the Devils Youth Foundation teamed up with Make-A-Wish New Jersey and Fanatics to make three young hockey fans’ dreams come true at the Prudential Center.

The three Make-A-Wish kids, Natalie, Giovanni, and Darby, got personalized jerseys and gifts from the team, skating with the players during practice and having lunch with Devils alumni afterwards. They also got to shop at the Devils Den Team Store thanks to Fanatics, the official sports partner of Make-A-Wish.

The weather on Saturday was picture perfect for the tug-of-war, which benefited both the Manasquan Recreation Department and the Point Pleasant Beach Recreation Committee, as well as Make-A-Wish New Jersey.
